Home Lab

I built a home lab, currently it is just two desktops running ubuntu server running a handful of services. The small one is just a Lenovo with a 6-core cpu, I will put a tiny gpu in it when the prices come down. I mainly use this for my VPN but it also runs one VM and has a SMB server running. My larger computer is the one I spend the most on (financially, mentally, and emotionally). That one is running a 12-core cpu, RTX 4060 GPU (I might add another for fun), and 64GB RAM. This one I rebuild frequently after causing too many conflicts or breaking too many services to get another service going. Currently it is setup with a few VM's so I can learn about windows server, domain controlers, and networking between them. Occasionally I've started up an ollama instance but it's not the best on 8GB VRAM and Nvidia drivers have been causing my CPU to get too hot. On my roadmap I want to host a site on it without opening my entire network to the world, get some Docker/podman containers going, and setup up a few Vlans using the opnsense router VM.

I also want to eventually turn it into a render farm for personal use using blender, I can run blender headless but eventually I will figure out how to have it run from a folder and I can just put my blend files into it and then get the videos or images from the files.

I don't have enough media to set up a plex server but I do want to learn more about streaming and NDI protocols. This with projection mapping could be a very cool project and I have some ideas but nothing solid enough to persue it....yet.
